Fall 08, #2: Laundry

1. Who does the laundry in your house?

2. Are you/or they a sorter? What's your system?

3. Do you fold at the dryer? Dump on the couch? Not fold at all? (Psst, Karen K, I like your system, do share with the class.)

4. Do you have any "laundry quirks"? Things that *can't* go in the dryer, dry in a specific manner, hung on a specific hanger, only get washed by hand--no matter what the care instructions say?

5. Do you have any great tips for stain removal?!? Please share!

In our house, I'm the laundry-doer. (No shock to most of you who know us.) But I will say that occasionally M will help by moving things from the washer to dryer or carrying the clean clothes up the stairs. (Have I mentioned how much I do NOT like the laundry being in the basement?!?) We have a laundry chute in our new place, so he does like to toss everything down there. At least the keeps the mess downstairs.

I sort, for the most part, unless I have partial loads of mixed stuff that I want to be done. If it's all been washed a zillion times, then I've been known to throw it all together. Towels are always done separately, though. Usually it's lights (white and pale colors) and darks, then towels makes our three compartment sorter work.

I generally dump on the couch, sit down put on a show and fold. If I had a laundry room with counters and such, I'd be all over folding right there, though.

And I have only a few quirks, but honestly most of them have fallen to the wayside in the last couple years. Things that fit well right now don't usually get thrown in the dryer, if I want them to remain that way. Mostly with jeans. BUT I do hate that stand-on-your-own phenomena of air drying/hanging things when no softener has been used in the washer. We call it crunchy jeans.

Oh, and I just can't stand stuff that has to be ironed!! What a hassle. Love those knits!

  1. Oh yeah, we'll have many little tidbits to share with this one. =) You'll find them at: www.knittingandliving.blogspot.com

  2. I've posted mine my friend - I too hate downstairs laundry rooms!!! They should be outlawed, especially when pregnant!

  3. I have a HUGE laundry quirk. It's called Never let Brian fold clothes.

Other than that, I'm not too picky!

  4. I do the laundry, I sort and I HATE folding. I do have a knack for getting stains out as long as my husband doesn't do the laundry. I use the Shout Advanced and the Stain be gone Advanced, those two generally get the job done. I have used Goop, this gets greasy stains out and for baby spit up the Dreft Stain remover is EXCELLENT!!! Love your random thoughts..

  5. We do not use fabric softener unless it is a dryer sheet. And, I have had to ask the Mrs. to not use a dryer sheet on towels, I think she humors me. Towels just do not absorb as well when put with fabric softener.

  6. Mine's up! Shoot, I just realized I left a load of laundry in the dryer overnight. At least it's just kitchen towels.

  7. Laundry...I HATE doing laundry. It gets sorted as I do it. I don't have much organization in the whole seperate baskets things. Pretty much I keep reds and towels seperate and that's it. Russ and I are pretty equal in who washes and dries. I think he actually enjoys hanging laundry on the clothesline. I am the sole folder and putter-away-person which almost never happens...unless we are having company over. It stays on the office couch until one or the other happens.

And I agree. I also do not use fabric softner on towels. It really does make them absorb better! Especially kitchen towels that are always used to clean up someones spilled drink. :)

  8. Laundry...it never ends...
So here is our system. I try to wash and dry all the laundry in the house by Sunday night...Amazing Race night:-) Then when the kids are in bed we fold together. This is how we typically do it. During the off season, if there is nothing that we are watching together then I fold most of it, but he still helps here and there.

I am a sorter, but I am like you RK if there are odds and ends and they are not red, anything goes. I guess that is a quirk of mine. I do not care how many times it has been washed reds stand alone.

Another quirk I have is that I do not dry overalls. I love denim overalls on the girls but I have found that when in the dryer the buckles either get broken or they get so hot that they can actually put holes in other clothes. It took me a while to figure that one out, but ever since...no overalls in they dryer. I hang them and enjoy the cruchie jeans later:-)

My problem with laundry is the putting away, because I tend to get busy with other stuff on Mondays and then we just start living out of the baskets...bad house wife I am:-) One note on this though, hubby puts his own away, so I just have to do mine and the girls. He would help with putting the girls away if he knew who's was what and where it goes.

As far as stains go I have tried many things and now I either use Shout or a bleach pen.
Oh and I love dryer sheets! They make everything smell so nice, I love getting towels and sheets out of the dryer...mmmm, so warm and smelly good!
So there you have it, I think RK was refering to the part where my hubby helps fold while we watch our favorite show as the part I should share. If I missed a part let me know RK:-)

  9. Karen K--I do like the sharing part. I was thinking of the special item you used to hold the clothes until folding time. But now you don't have one up anymore, I forgot! The Pack N Play!

  10. 1-I do about 90%. I can knock out six loads in a day sometimes!
    2-Just the usual sorting.
3-Dump on the green chair is a must and fold while watching TV or the kids.
4-Maybe a blouse or two gets hung up but everything else gets dried.
5-Shout has been the best thing so far. I've gotten 95% of all the boys' stains out. But here's the best thing that I've tried. My towels were getting that icky smell of moldiness. So I wash them in hot (even the dark ones) and add vinegar to the fabric cycle and then do an extra rinse. They smell great! Seriously!
Hope you're having a great week!

  11. I have laundry issues. I like it done my way. Only full loads for ecology's sake, pre-treat stains, hang to dry as many items as possible.
    It is totally ridiculous!
My husband gets mad because he cannot understand my bizantine system. It is somewhat like your 'if it is old it all goes in together, if it fits we must treat it kindly'. he wants hard and fast rules. How can he know what fits?
thank goodness our nanny does the laundry now. I try to stay out of it but cannot reisist running to oxyclean something the girls stain!

  12. I do most of the laundry. I wish I had a laundry room. Ours is in a closet in the hallway. Hubby and I have a sorter that we use and the kids have a sorter....well let's say....we're lucky if it gets used. I prefer to fold them at the dryer because I know they will get put away right then. Otherwise, they will stay on the coffee table for a week! I'm picky about the way towels are folded. I can't stand for them to be folded different ways. I send the stains to my mom! She's a pro!

  13. Ah yes if you ever feel like you are without a good spot to put the clothes between drying and folding. Get out your pack and play! I can get a good 9 loads in there!!!

  14. 1. I do the laundry, the girls like to push the wet clothes into the dryer and put the dryer sheet in, but it's basically all me.

2.Yes, I have a 3 bag sorter also, one for darks, one for towels, and one for whites and work clothes (they are supposed to be dry cleaned but I just wash them onthe delicate cycle and call it a day!!)

    3. I fold my clothes at the dryer cuz I have a clothes rack in the laundry room where I hang my clothes until I decided to carry them to my closet. I fold the towels and the girls' clothes on the couch.

    4. Nope, it all goes in the dryer. We don't like crunchy clothes, either!

5.I use Shout spray gel and let it sit for the entire alotted 7 days. I have heard that scrubbing the stain with Dawn (yes, dish soap!) and letting it sit for 15-20 mins can be a miracle worker

31 for 21: What to say

I have encountered plenty of people who ask "How old is she?" when Braska and I are out together here and there. They always guess her age about 5 months younger than she is, but that's ok, since that's what size she is. I have said several times that I can imagine it will bother me a bit more, although still not a huge deal, when she turns one next month and I see their reaction to that, as she still is in her car seat/carrier when we're in a restaurant or in a store since she doesn't sit up. Today, I met some friends for brunch. The waitress was a nice enough, very young girl, and she started cooing at Braska right away. That's nice. I don't mind, Braska likes the attention, and I'm proud of my cutie. The waitress asked her age, and I told her 11 months. She then said, "But she's not walking yet?" as she noticed that she was up to the table in her car seat/carrier. I just agreed and said, "Not yet." She said she h...

Can I get a do-over?

If you are in need of a laugh at another's expense, I invite you to read on... really, it's totally ok. I can take it. This might end up long, but I wanna remember this special day. Oh so special... Today is my first day to have both girls and be on my own. Yeah, it's been two weeks, but I'm apparently slow at learning how to deal with this kind of thing. I knew it would be a challenge, but I thought with starting way early, we could make it. The quick ending is that we did make it...but that's not really the whole story. Kinlee's been sleeping til about 9 am or so after getting up twice in the night. That's ok, I'm dealing with it. But since Braska is supposed to be at school at 10 am on Mondays, I thought I better not sleep in like I prefer, and instead, I should get up and get things moving earlier to be sure we're on time. Not a problem, since Braska decided to be up twice last night in addition to Kinlee's two times. One time overlapped...so...

Little call, big letters

This will make more sense to you DS moms and families out there... I apologize for the cryptic nature, but you'll have to trust my reasoning. Braska had a lab draw on Tuesday last week. The GI called me Wednesday and said there were some significantly elevated levels in the results. Ok fine. Not like we've never had an abnormal lab. But then he used *those* words...the C word and the L word. Said he'd be talking to hem/onc. We needed to go redraw on Friday morning. We didn't freak or anything, but when I hung up the phone, I thought, "Wow, so that's what it's like the first time they mention it." We took her for her draw again on Friday morning, and we figured everything was fine since we got no call over the weekend. Yesterday I checked in with them. Dr. R confirmed that everything was clear, almost in a "weird way," but they checked with the lab to make sure it was a viable result. All is well. Follow up in 6 months as usual unle...
